Quick answers
How do I find the accurate Qibla direction?
Use your exact location to calculate the bearing to the Kaaba in Makkah, then face that many degrees clockwise from north. This page does the calculation instantly; on a phone, the live compass shows you when you are facing the Qibla. Calibrate the compass and keep away from metal.
What is the Qibla direction from Dubai?
From Dubai the Qibla is about 258° from true north, which is west with a slight turn to the south-west. From Abu Dhabi it is about 260°. The Kaaba is roughly 1,600 km away. Use the finder above for your exact spot.
Which direction is Qibla in Pakistan and India?
From Pakistan and northern India the Qibla is almost due west: about 268° from Karachi, 260° from Lahore and 267° from Delhi. From Mumbai it is about 280°, slightly north of west, because Mumbai is south of Makkah's latitude.
Is a Qibla compass app accurate?
The calculated bearing is exact. The live arrow is only as accurate as your phone's magnetometer, which metal, magnets and cases can disturb. Calibrate with a figure-of-eight, hold the phone flat away from metal, and double-check with the degree number or a nearby masjid.
Why is the Qibla north-east from America?
The Earth is round, so the shortest path to Makkah follows a great circle. From New York that path heads north-east over the Atlantic, about 58° from north, even though a flat map makes Makkah look south-east.
Does the Islamic Tracker app have a Qibla compass?
Yes. The free Islamic Tracker app includes a Qibla compass that uses your phone's sensors and location, alongside prayer times with Adhan alerts, a Salah tracker and a Quran reader. It has no ads.
Tips for an accurate reading
- Calibrate your compass. Move your phone in a slow figure-of-eight a few times before you start.
- Keep away from metal and magnets. Steel tables, cars, speakers, laptops and magnetic phone cases can pull the compass off by many degrees.
- Hold the phone flat and face up, at waist height.
- Double-check if it matters. A local masjid's mihrab or prayer-room markings are the best reference where available.
How the Qibla direction is calculated
The Kaaba in Makkah is at about 21.4225° N, 39.8262° E. From your coordinates, the page calculates the great-circle bearing, which is the direction of the shortest path over the Earth's surface, and the distance. For example, the Qibla is about 258° from Dubai, 119° from London and 58° from New York.
Phone compasses point to magnetic north, which can differ from true north by a few degrees depending on where you are. Many phones correct for this automatically.
Qibla compass: using your phone to face the Qibla
A Qibla compass combines two things: the Qibla bearing for your location (the number of degrees from north, calculated above) and your phone's compass sensor, which tells it which way the phone is pointing. When the two line up, the 🕋 arrow points straight ahead and you are facing the Kaaba.
Phone compasses use a magnetometer, which can drift. It is thrown off by metal furniture, cars, speakers, laptops and magnetic phone cases, and it needs recalibrating from time to time. That is why the tips above matter: calibrate with a figure-of-eight, hold the phone flat and step away from metal before you trust the reading.
Accurate Qibla direction: how to check it
- Use your exact location, not just your city. Over long distances a small error in position changes the bearing only slightly, but using your real coordinates removes any doubt.
- Check the number, not just the arrow. The bearing in degrees is exact; the live arrow is only as good as your phone's compass at that moment.
- Cross-check once with a fixed reference: the mihrab of a nearby masjid, a prayer-room marker, or the sun's position at a known time.
- Recalibrate when travelling, especially in hotels and offices with steel structures.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find the Qibla direction?
Allow location access or pick your city, and the page calculates the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah from where you are, in degrees clockwise from north. On a phone, tap Start compass and turn until the arrow points straight up.
Is this Qibla finder really free?
Yes. It is 100% free, with no ads and no sign-up. Your location is used only in your browser to do the calculation and is not stored or sent anywhere.
Why does my phone compass give a slightly different direction?
Phone compasses are affected by metal, magnets, phone cases and electronics nearby, and they need calibrating from time to time. Move away from metal objects, calibrate by moving your phone in a figure-of-eight, and try again.
Why is the Qibla not simply towards Makkah on a flat map?
The Earth is round, so the shortest path to the Kaaba follows a great circle. That is why, for example, the Qibla from North America points north-east rather than south-east as a flat map might suggest.
Does the Qibla finder work on iPhone?
Yes. On iPhone, tap Start compass and allow motion and orientation access when Safari asks. If you denied it before, close the tab and open the page again.
