Quick answers

How do I calculate zakat?

Add up your zakatable wealth (cash, savings, gold, silver, investments and money owed to you), subtract debts due now, and check the total against the nisab. If it is above nisab and you have held it for a lunar year, pay 2.5%. The calculator above does the arithmetic.

What is the nisab for zakat?

Nisab is the minimum wealth on which zakat is due: the value of 87.48 g of gold or 612.36 g of silver. Many scholars recommend the silver nisab because it is lower and benefits more people in need. Multiply the grams by today's local price per gram.

What is the difference between zakat and sadaqah?

Zakat is an obligatory 2.5% on wealth above nisab, paid once a year to specific categories of recipients. Sadaqah is voluntary charity of any amount, at any time, to anyone in need. Both are rewarded, but zakat is a pillar of Islam.

How do I calculate zakat in Pakistan or India?

Use the same method: total your zakatable assets in rupees, subtract debts due, and compare with nisab, calculated as 612.36 g of silver (or 87.48 g of gold) times the local price per gram. Pay 2.5% of the total if it is above nisab.

Is zakat due on gold jewellery?

Scholars differ. The Hanafi school requires zakat on gold and silver jewellery; the other major schools generally exempt jewellery that is worn regularly. Follow your school, and include investment gold in all cases.

Can I track my sadaqah in an app?

Yes. Islamic Tracker includes a zakat calculator and lets you keep track of your sadaqah (voluntary charity) in one place, alongside your prayers, Quran and dhikr. It is free and has no ads.

How much zakat do I pay on £1,000?

If your total zakatable wealth is above the nisab and you have held it for a lunar year, zakat is 2.5%, so £1,000 means £25 of zakat. The same rule works in any currency: 1,000 rupees, dollars or dirhams gives 25. Check your total against the silver or gold nisab first.

How zakat is calculated

Items for personal use, such as your home, car and clothes, are not included. Personal-use jewellery is the one area where the schools differ, so the calculator lets you choose.

Gold or silver nisab: which should I use?

Nisab is the minimum wealth on which zakat is due. Scholars set it at the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Because silver is much cheaper than gold, the silver nisab is a far lower amount, so more people reach it and more zakat reaches the poor. For that reason many scholars and organisations recommend the silver nisab when your wealth is mixed. Others use the gold nisab, especially when savings are held mainly in gold. If you are unsure, follow your local scholar or zakat authority.

Nisab in grams: gold and silver

To find the nisab in your currency, multiply the weight below by today's price per gram. We don't show a live price, so please check today's gold and silver price per gram with a local jeweller or a trusted price website before you calculate.

MetalTraditional measureRounded figure
Gold87.48 g (7.5 tola)85 g
Silver612.36 g (52.5 tola)595 g

Example: if silver costs $1 per gram today, the silver nisab is 612.36 × $1 = $612.36 (or $595 with the rounded figure). If gold costs $80 per gram, the gold nisab is 87.48 × $80 = $6,998.40 (or $6,800 with 85 g). Use the same weights with prices in rupees, pounds, dirhams or riyals.

Worked example: zakat on gold only

Yusuf has kept 100 g of gold coins for a full lunar year and has no other savings. At $80 per gram his gold is worth $8,000, which is above both the gold and the silver nisab. His zakat is 2.5% of $8,000 = $200, or he can give 2.5 g of gold. If he only had 50 g ($4,000), he would be below the gold nisab but above the silver nisab, so whether zakat is due depends on which nisab he follows.

Calculate zakat and keep track of your sadaqah in the free Islamic Tracker app.

Worked example

Aisha has had the following for a full lunar year: $6,000 in her bank account, 20 g of gold coins and $1,500 in shares. She owes $500 in bills due this month. Gold is $80 per gram and silver $1 per gram.

Cash and bank$6,000
Gold: 20 g × $80$1,600
Shares$1,500
Less bills due now−$500
Net zakatable wealth$8,600
Silver nisab: 612.36 g × $1$612.36
Zakat due: 2.5% of $8,600$215

Using the gold nisab instead (87.48 g × $80 = $6,998.40), she is still above nisab, so the zakat is the same $215.

Zakat on savings, gold, shares and crypto

Savings

Cash at home, bank balances and savings accounts are all zakatable at 2.5% once they have been above nisab for a lunar year.

Gold and silver

Gold and silver held as savings, such as coins and bars, are zakatable on their current market value. Jewellery you wear is treated differently by different schools, which is why the calculator has a separate option for it.

Shares and funds

Shares bought to trade are usually counted at their full market value. For long-term investments, some scholars allow paying only on the zakatable assets of the company. If that applies to you, a scholar or your fund's zakat guidance can help.

Cryptocurrency

Scholars differ on how cryptocurrency should be treated. Many who consider it permissible to hold treat it like cash or trading assets, valued at its market price on your zakat date. Because views differ, please consult a qualified scholar before including it.

A Zakat app on your phone

If you would rather work out your Zakat on your phone, the free Islamic Tracker app includes a Zakat calculator alongside prayer times, a Quran reader and a Qibla compass. Zakat by country

The method above works everywhere: value your assets in local currency, find nisab by multiplying 87.48 g of gold or 612.36 g of silver by today's local price per gram, and pay 2.5% if you are above it. Some countries also have official zakat bodies:

Pakistan

Under the national zakat system, zakat may be deducted automatically from some bank accounts at the start of Ramadan, using a nisab announced each year; you can file a declaration to manage this yourself. Many people still calculate and pay their own zakat on other assets.

India

There is no state zakat collection. People calculate their own zakat and pay it directly or through trusted local organisations and masjids. The silver nisab is widely used.

United Arab Emirates

The UAE has a government zakat fund that collects and distributes zakat, and also offers guidance on calculating it. Paying directly to eligible recipients is also common.

Saudi Arabia

The Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority collects zakat from businesses. Individuals calculate and pay zakat on their personal wealth themselves.

Bangladesh

A government zakat fund operates through the Islamic Foundation, and many people also pay directly to relatives in need and local institutions.

Indonesia

BAZNAS, the national zakat agency, and licensed zakat institutions (LAZ) collect and distribute zakat, and zakat paid through them can be deducted from taxable income.

Malaysia

Zakat is administered by each state's religious council or zakat centre, and zakat paid to them can be claimed as a tax rebate. Check your state's zakat centre for its nisab and payment options.

Frequently asked questions

Is the nisab 85 g or 87.48 g of gold?

Both figures are in use. 87.48 g of gold and 612.36 g of silver come from the traditional measures of 7.5 tola and 52.5 tola. Many zakat organisations round these to 85 g of gold and 595 g of silver. The difference is small; follow the figure used by your local scholar or zakat authority. This calculator uses 87.48 g and 612.36 g.

How do I calculate zakat on gold?

Weigh the zakatable gold you own, multiply the grams by today's price per gram, and add the result to your other zakatable wealth. If the total is above nisab and a lunar year has passed, pay 2.5%. For example, 100 g of gold at $80 per gram is $8,000, and 2.5% of that is $200. You can also give 2.5 g of gold for every 100 g.

What is the nisab value today?

Nisab changes every day with the price of gold and silver. Multiply 87.48 g (or 85 g) by today's gold price per gram for the gold nisab, or 612.36 g (or 595 g) by today's silver price per gram for the silver nisab. Check the price per gram in your own currency with a local jeweller or a trusted price website.

What if my wealth dropped below nisab during the year?

Scholars differ. In the Hanafi school, what counts is that your wealth was above nisab at the start and the end of the lunar year; dipping below in between does not reset the year unless it fell to zero. Other schools require it to stay above nisab for the whole year. Follow your school or ask a local scholar.

How much zakat do I have to pay?

Zakat is 2.5% (one fortieth) of your net zakatable wealth, provided it is at or above the nisab threshold and a full lunar year (hawl) has passed while you held it.

What is nisab?

Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth that makes zakat due. It is the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Many scholars recommend the silver nisab because it is lower, so more people qualify to give to the poor; others use gold. If you are unsure, ask a local scholar.

Do I pay zakat on jewellery I wear?

This is a matter of scholarly difference. The Hanafi school counts gold and silver jewellery for personal use as zakatable, while the majority of scholars do not. Use the jewellery toggle in the calculator to follow the view you hold.

Is zakat due on my house or car?

No. Items for personal use, such as your home, car, furniture and clothes, are not zakatable. Property held for resale or business stock is treated differently.

When is zakat due?

Zakat becomes due once a full lunar (Hijri) year has passed while your wealth stayed at or above nisab. Many people pick a fixed date, such as a day in Ramadan, to calculate it each year.

Is this online zakat calculator free?

Yes. The calculator is 100% free, with no ads and no sign-up. Your numbers stay in your browser and are not stored or sent anywhere.

Can I use this zakat calculator for 2027?

Yes. Enter today's gold and silver prices per gram and your current wealth whenever your zakat is due, whether in 2026, 2027 or later.

Do I pay zakat on cryptocurrency?

Scholars differ on cryptocurrency. Many who allow holding it treat it like cash or trading assets, valued on your zakat date, but please consult a qualified scholar for your situation.
